This Wednesday we embark on a new liturgical season: Lent. Our usual Lenten practices will take on a new look as all things have during the Pandemic. The Holy See has issued guidelines on the distribution of ashes this year. The major changes this year is that the presider will only say the formula once before the distribution of ashes of either “Repent, believe in the Gospel,” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Then the faithful will come forward individually and instead of being marked with the sign of the cross on their forehead, ashes will simply be sprinkled on their heads. The distribution of ashes via sprinkling is a common practice in some countries but is not well known here.
