GOOD FRIDAY, APRIL 3rd @ 7PM
Please join us for our Tenebrae service, focusing on the last hours of Christ’s life.
What is Tenebrae?
The name Tenebrae—the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows”—has for centuries been used to describe the ancient monastic services of Matins and Lauds celebrated during the final three days of Holy Week. In medieval times, these services came to be observed on the preceding evenings, inviting the faithful into prayerful reflection as Christ journeys toward the cross.
In this moving service, we meditate on that journey through poem, anthem, song, and story. Gradually, one by one, the candles and lights in the church are extinguished, until only a single candle remains—a symbol of Christ. Near the end of the service, even this candle is hidden, suggesting the apparent triumph of darkness and evil. At the very end, a loud sound is heard, recalling the earthquake at the moment of the Resurrection. The candle is then returned to its place, and by its light all of us depart in total silence.
This is our third time offering this beautiful and deeply prayerful service. This year, Tenebrae will take place on Good Friday, April 3rd, at 7:00 PM. Our choir will present Tenebrae: A Service of Shadows, a powerful and symbolic setting designed by composer Heather Sorenson, whose music gives profound voice to this sacred moment.
Beth and I truly hope you will join us, along with our Music Ministry, for this evening of prayer and reflection.
Love and prayers,
Fr. Wayne & Beth
